U10 Learn to Play Competition
Where will the games be played?
All games will be played at Block V, Sydney Uni – Cumberland Campus on East St in Lidcombe, the same location as where we hold our Lidcombe classes.
What time will the games be?
We estimate the U10 Learn to Play Competition will run from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM each Friday during term, with games scheduled at 4:30pm and 5:30pm and teams rotating through those two timeslots. Each game will take approximately 50 minutes to play with a short warm-up before each game.
On the first Friday of each term we will run scrimmage days to help returning players shake off the holiday rust and organise new players into competitive teams. Official games will then run for the remainder of the term, with the final and bronze medal games played on the last Friday of term.
How old are players in U10?
Players in U10 must be under 10 for the duration of 2026 (meaning they cannot turn 11 that year and still play U10s) and the majority of players are 7 to 9 years old. We may allow some exceptions for new-to-basketball players who are already 10 to compete but we make these decisions on a case-by-case basis.
All U10 games will use an 8ft basket and are designed for players beginning to play 5v5 with weekly skill emphases to teach in-game concepts such as man-to-man defense, transition play, passing ahead, etc.
How do the games work?
U10 games consist of a warmup followed by two 18-minute halves and take approximately 50 minutes to complete
Teams will have between six and nine players and will have a coach provided by Young Hoopers if registered as an individual player. U10 Games will be mixed (i.e. boys and girls in one competition) as there is minimal physical differences between the sexes in this age bracket.
Each game will have a referee and a bench person provided by Young Hoopers. Our competitions are designed to help players learn the fundamentals of the game so referees will work with coaches, to ensure players learn the rules and basic concepts of basketball while playing. The season schedule, results and ladder will be shared on our affiliate The U League’s website (www.theuleague.org.au) under the heading “Lidcombe Junior Competition” once nominations are finalised.
